Will I get a refund if I cancel mid-cycle?

No. GitBook's billing policy states all fees are non-cancelable and non-refundable. If you cancel, you retain access until the end of the current billing period but no partial refund is issued. Billing errors must be disputed within 60 days of the statement date.

What happens to my content after cancellation?

Your internal spaces (the editing workspace) remain intact on the free Basic plan. Published sites downgrade to Basic tier — premium features like custom domains, custom branding, advanced analytics, authenticated access, and AI are disabled, but your sites stay published with GitBook branding.

Can I reactivate my subscription after cancelling?

Yes. Before the billing period ends, click 'Renew plan' in billing settings to resume with no interruption. After the period ends, purchase a new plan from the Plans settings page.

Can I export my data after cancelling?

Yes. You can request a data export for up to 60 days after termination. After that window, data preservation is not guaranteed for closed accounts. Note that cancelling a plan is different from deleting your account — account deletion permanently removes all data.

Is there a free plan I can downgrade to instead of cancelling?

Yes. GitBook offers a free Basic plan with unlimited private spaces and basic site publishing (with GitBook branding, no custom domain). Non-profits, open-source projects, and qualifying educational groups can also apply for the Community plan, which includes Ultimate-tier features for free.

Who can cancel a GitBook subscription?

Only organization admins have access to billing settings and can initiate a cancellation. Regular members cannot cancel the plan.

Open Settings

In the GitBook app, click the settings (gear) icon at the bottom of the left sidebar.

Go to Organization Settings

Click '[Your Organization Name] Settings' — your org name followed by the word 'Settings'.

Open the Billing tab

In the settings panel left sidebar, click the 'Billing' tab. This opens the Stripe-hosted billing portal.

Click 'Cancel plan'

On the billing page, click the 'Cancel plan' button.

Confirm cancellation

On the confirmation screen, click the second 'Cancel plan' button to finalize. Auto-renewal is immediately disabled and your plan remains active until the end of the current billing period.
