Can I still use my 1&1 email account after cancellation?

Yes, temporarily. After the contract ends you retain read-only access to your 1&1 email inbox so you can save your messages, but you can no longer change your password. Save all important emails locally before the account is permanently deleted.

Will I get a refund for the remaining days of a prepaid period?

1&1 does not offer pro-rated refunds for partial billing periods. Your contract and access remain active until the official contract end date. No partial-month refunds are issued under the standard termination policy.

Can I reactivate my contract after cancellation?

Yes, but only before the contract end date. If you change your mind after pre-registering online, simply do nothing — the pre-registration expires after 7 days if not confirmed by phone, and the contract continues. After the contract has fully ended, you would need to sign up as a new customer.

What happens to my phone number when I cancel?

You must port your phone number to another provider within 30 days of the contract end date. Request the number port (Rufnummermitnahme) from your new provider before or shortly after the contract ends, or the number will be released and lost.

What notice period applies to my contract?

During the initial minimum contract term (typically 24 months), cancellation takes effect at the end of the minimum term. After the minimum term expires, you can cancel with just 1 month's notice. The date 1&1 receives your cancellation — not the date you send it — determines which notice period applies.

Can I cancel without giving a reason (extraordinary cancellation)?

You can request an extraordinary cancellation (Sonderkündigung) without serving the full notice period if: 1&1 cannot provide service at your new address after a move, there is a significant price increase (you have 3 months to cancel without penalty), the service has failed for 4+ consecutive days, or you are relocating abroad for 6+ months. Log in to Control-Center

Go to https://control-center.1und1.de/ and sign in with your email address (or customer number) and password.

Open Contract section

In the main navigation, click "Vertrag" (Contract). If you have multiple contracts, select the specific one you want to cancel from the list.

Click "Vertrag kündigen"

On the contract overview page, click the button labelled "Vertrag kündigen" (Cancel Contract). This opens the cancellation flow.

Select "Hier Kündigung vormerken"

Scroll to the section "Vertrag zur Kündigung vormerken" and click "Hier Kündigung vormerken" (Register cancellation here). The page shows your earliest possible cancellation date.

Provide cancellation reason and continue

Select or enter an optional cancellation reason from the dropdown (e.g. "Zu teuer", "Umzug", "Wechsel zum Mitbewerber"), then click "Weiter" (Continue). You may be shown a "loyalty offer" — click "Kündigung fortsetzen" (Continue cancellation) to proceed past it.

Confirm the pre-registration

Click "Hier Kündigung vormerken" a second time to finalize the online pre-registration. You will receive a confirmation email with a case number.

Confirm by phone within 7 days

Call 1&1 customer service at 0721 960 96 00 (Mon–Fri 08:00–22:00, Sat–Sun 09:00–21:00) and quote your case number and 1&1 Service-PIN to verbally confirm the cancellation. This step is mandatory — the cancellation is not legally binding until confirmed by phone.
