Can I still use Microsoft 365 after canceling?

Yes. Your subscription stays active until the end of the current billing period. You keep full access to all apps and services until that date, after which your apps switch to read-only mode.

Will I get a refund when I cancel?

Not necessarily. Refund eligibility depends on your country and subscription type. Full or prorated refunds are available in Canada, Israel, Korea, and Turkey for all subscription lengths. In Denmark, Finland, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, and Portugal, refunds apply to subscriptions longer than one month. In most other regions, no refund is issued — you simply lose access at the end of the billing period.

What happens to my OneDrive files after cancellation?

Your OneDrive storage drops to 5 GB (free tier). If you have more than 5 GB stored, you enter a read-only state and cannot upload or sync new files. Files are not immediately deleted — Microsoft gives you time to download or reduce storage — but files may be permanently deleted after 6 months if you remain over quota.

Can I reactivate my Microsoft 365 subscription?

Yes. You can reactivate at any time by visiting account.microsoft.com/services, finding the expired subscription, and selecting 'Reactivate'. Your data and settings are restored if you reactivate before Microsoft permanently deletes them.

What if I bought Microsoft 365 through the Apple App Store or Google Play?

You cannot cancel through Microsoft's website in this case. You must cancel directly through the App Store (iOS: Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions) or Google Play Store (Play Store → Subscriptions) to stop future billing.

What happens to Word, Excel, and other Office apps after cancellation?

The desktop apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) switch to read-only mode — you can view documents but cannot create or edit them. To edit files, you would need to use the free web versions at office.com, which have reduced functionality.

Go to your Microsoft account services

Navigate to https://account.microsoft.com/services/microsoft365 and sign in with the Microsoft account used to purchase your Microsoft 365 subscription.

Locate your Microsoft 365 subscription

Find your Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or other plan in the list of active subscriptions and click the 'Manage' button beneath it.

Click 'Cancel subscription'

On the subscription management page, select 'Cancel subscription' (on some accounts this button reads 'Upgrade or Cancel'). If you only see 'Turn on recurring billing', your subscription is already set to expire and no further action is needed.

Review the retention page

Microsoft displays a 'Please review' page showing alternative cheaper subscription options before allowing you to proceed. Read through this page — it is designed to discourage cancellation by presenting discounted plan alternatives.

Select 'I don't want my subscription'

At the bottom of the retention page, choose between 'I want to keep my benefits' (keeps subscription) or 'I don't want my subscription' (proceeds with cancellation). Select 'I don't want my subscription' to continue.

Complete the cancellation survey

Microsoft asks for a brief reason for cancellation. Select the most applicable reason from the dropdown and optionally add feedback, then click 'Cancel subscription' or 'Confirm' to finalize.

Check your confirmation email

You will receive a confirmation email from Microsoft. Your subscription remains active until the end of the current billing period — you are not cut off immediately.
