eSIM Not Working? The Five Failure Modes and How to Fix Each (Step-by-Step)

When an eSIM activation fails or the eSIM stops working, the cause is almost always one of five things. This guide walks you through the diagnostic order โ€” each step grounded in the relevant Apple, Google, FCC, or vendor source.

Why eSIM activation fails: the five-cause framework

Every travel eSIM provider โ€” Airalo, Saily, Holafly, Ubigi, Nomad โ€” has the same five failure modes when an eSIM does not activate or stops working. Working through them in frequency order resolves most cases. This guide sources every step against the relevant Apple support page, Google Pixel documentation, FCC guidance, or vendor install document. If you have already tried random suggestions from other forums, start over with this list โ€” the order matters because some fixes (like APN re-config) only work after the prior step (a registered network) has succeeded.

Failure 1: phone is carrier-locked (eSIM disabled)

The single most common cause: the phone hardware supports eSIM but the carrier has disabled it on your specific device. This is common on phones bought on contract. The FCC's voluntary unlocking guidelines at fcc.gov/consumers/guides/cell-phone-unlocking state that postpaid devices unlock once contract obligations have been met, and prepaid devices must be unlocked no later than one year after activation. A formal 60-day unlock requirement was proposed in FCC 24-77 (Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, July 2024) but is not yet final rule. To check: Settings โ†’ Cellular โ†’ Add eSIM. If the option is missing or grayed out, contact your carrier and ask for the device unlock โ€” they may require contract completion or a written request. If the option exists but the install fails specifically, move to the next step.

Failure 2: profile already consumed (single-use activation)

Many eSIM profiles distribute via a single-use Apple Universal Link or QR code. The activation code embedded in the URL or QR is consumed on first install โ€” even if the install fails partway. If you scanned the QR or tapped the link once, then deleted the partial profile and tried again, the second install will fail because the activation code is dead. To recover: contact the vendor's support, request a new activation code, do not retry the dead one. Vendors generally re-issue a fresh code at no charge if the first one never delivered a working profile.

Failure 3: APN auto-configuration did not load

If the eSIM installs and registers on the carrier network (Settings โ†’ Cellular โ†’ the eSIM line shows a network name and signal bars) but data does not flow, the APN (Access Point Name) did not auto-configure. The eSIM profile carries an APN suggestion; the device sometimes does not apply it. To fix: Settings โ†’ Cellular โ†’ tap the eSIM line โ†’ Cellular Data Network โ†’ APN. Each vendor publishes its APN string in the install email or app โ€” use it verbatim. After saving, toggle Cellular Data off and back on. If the APN field is blocked from editing on your phone, the carrier has locked APN configuration โ€” combine with the unlock step in failure 1.

Failure 4: Wi-Fi is blocking the activation request

Apple's Universal Link install method requires the device to reach esimsetup.apple.com to fetch the eSIM profile. Some corporate networks, school Wi-Fi, and a subset of airport Wi-Fi networks block requests to that endpoint. Symptom: tapping the install link shows a spinner that never resolves, or returns an unhelpful 'cannot connect' error. Fix: switch the device to a different network โ€” your home cellular if you have signal, a personal hotspot from another phone, or a different Wi-Fi network. Then retry the install. The Airalo install help notes verbatim 'Stable internet connection (preferably Wi-Fi)' but does not specify which Wi-Fi networks are problematic; the LPA-endpoint block is documented in eSIM-Go's developer help and in many vendor support transcripts.

Failure 5: device does not actually support eSIM

Verify against the vendor's official compatibility page before assuming the eSIM provider is at fault. iPhone XS (2018) and later support eSIM, per Apple's official documentation at support.apple.com/en-us/118569. iPhone 14 and later sold in the US are eSIM-only. iPhone 15 and later, plus iPad Pro 13-inch (M4, M5) Wi-Fi + Cellular and newer iPad Air models with M2/M3/M4 chips, support eSIM exclusively in the US. Pixel 3a and later support SIM + eSIM; Pixel 7 and later support two simultaneous eSIM profiles; Pixel 10 and later (except Pixel 10 Pro Fold) are eSIM-only โ€” per support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/9449293. Diagnostic order summary

Always start at Settings โ†’ Cellular and check whether the new eSIM line shows a network name. (1) If 'Add eSIM' is missing entirely: device unsupported or carrier-locked โ€” start with failure 5, then failure 1. (2) If the line shows but no network name: profile is dead or not yet registered โ€” try failure 2 (request new activation code). (3) If the line shows a network name but Cellular Data is grayed out: APN issue โ€” failure 3. When to ask for a refund

Reputable travel eSIM vendors will refund a never-activated eSIM. The standard documentation pattern: open a support ticket on the day the install attempt failed, attach a screenshot of Settings โ†’ Cellular showing the line is empty or shows 'No Service' and the eSIM has zero data usage. Do not retry indefinitely โ€” once the profile registers with the partner network and consumes any data, refund eligibility ends.
