No. Your paid subscription remains active until the end of your current billing period. The downgrade to the free plan happens automatically after that period expires.

Can I get a refund after canceling?

Proton offers a 30-day money-back guarantee for new subscriptions. Both the cancellation and the refund request must occur within 30 days of the initial purchase. Refunds are not available for payments made by cash or bank transfer, and each account is eligible for a refund only once.

What happens to my emails and data?

Your data is not deleted immediately. If your stored data exceeds the free plan limits (1 GB for Mail), you will be unable to send or receive new emails until you free up space or upgrade again. Proton may store excess data for up to 12 months. After 12 months of inactivity on the free plan, the account and all data may be permanently deleted.

Can I reactivate my subscription after canceling?

Yes. You can resubscribe at any time by logging into account.proton.me and selecting a paid plan. Your account and data remain intact as long as you reactivate before the 12-month inactivity deletion threshold.

Can I turn off auto-renewal without fully canceling?

No. Proton does not offer a way to disable auto-renewal while keeping the paid plan active. Your only options are to keep auto-renewal enabled or to cancel the subscription (which stays active until the billing period ends). A common workaround is to use a virtual card that will decline the next renewal charge.

Will canceling affect my Proton Drive, VPN, or other Proton services?

Yes. A Proton subscription covers all Proton services bundled under your plan. Downgrading to the free plan reduces limits across Mail, Drive, VPN, Pass, and Calendar simultaneously. Any features exclusive to paid plans will become unavailable once the billing period ends.

Sign in to your Proton account

Go to account.proton.me and sign in with your Proton credentials.

Open Settings

Click the gear icon (⚙) in the top-right corner of the dashboard to open Settings.

Navigate to All Settings → Subscription

In the Settings sidebar, click 'All settings', then select the 'Subscription' tab.

Initiate cancellation

Scroll down to find the cancellation section and click the 'Cancel subscription' link or button.

Review downgrade warnings

Confirm with 'Continue'

Click the 'Continue' button to proceed past the warning screen.

Final confirmation

Click 'Cancel subscription' one final time to confirm. Your subscription will remain active until the end of the current billing period, then automatically downgrade to the free plan.
