How much notice do I need to give?

Under the German Telekommunikationsgesetz (TKG), you can cancel with one month's notice at any time once the minimum contract term (usually 24 months) has expired. During the minimum term, you must cancel with one month's notice before the end of that term; otherwise the contract auto-renews on a monthly basis.

Can I keep my mobile number after cancelling?

Yes. You have up to 30 days after the contract end date to port (Rufnummernmitnahme) your number to a new provider. Request the porting from your new provider — they handle the process. If you do not port within 30 days, the number may be reassigned and permanently lost.

Will I receive a refund for unused prepaid credit or advance payments?

If you have paid monthly fees in advance beyond your final contract end date, 1&1 is obligated to refund the pro-rata overpayment. Prepaid credit balances on SIM-only prepaid accounts are generally not refunded. Contact 1&1 customer service to confirm your specific billing situation.

Can I reactivate my contract after cancellation?

Reactivation of the same contract is not standard practice. You would need to sign up for a new contract. If your number has not yet been ported or reassigned, you may be able to negotiate with 1&1 to retain it, but this is not guaranteed.

What happens to my data after the contract ends?

1&1 retains personal and billing data for the legally required retention periods (typically 10 years for financial records under German law). You can request deletion of data beyond legal obligations by submitting a GDPR erasure request (Recht auf Löschung) to datenschutz@1und1.de.

Is cancellation by email valid?

Yes. Sending a cancellation letter to kuendigung@1und1.de is accepted by 1&1 and does not require a follow-up phone call, unlike the online Control-Center flow. Include your full name, customer number, contract/phone number, desired cancellation date, and a request for written confirmation (Kündigungsbestätigung). Sending via registered post (Einschreiben mit Rückschein) to 1&1 Telecom GmbH, Elgendorfer Straße 57, 56410 Montabaur is the most legally secure alternative.

Log in to the 1&1 Control-Center

Go to https://control-center.1und1.de and log in with your 1&1 email address (or customer number) and password.

Open the contract section

In the main navigation, click on 'Vertrag' (Contract) to open your contract overview.

Select the contract to cancel

If you have multiple contracts, choose the mobile contract you wish to cancel from the list.

Click 'Vertrag kündigen'

On the contract detail page, click the button labelled 'Vertrag kündigen' (Cancel contract).

Register the cancellation

Scroll down to the section 'Vertrag zur Kündigung vormerken' and click 'Hier Kündigung vormerken' (Register cancellation here).

Select a cancellation reason and confirm

Choose a reason from the dropdown or enter a custom reason in the text field, then click 'Weiter' (Continue). On the next screen, click 'Hier Kündigung vormerken' once more to finalize the online registration.

Check email for confirmation reference number

You will receive an automated confirmation email with a reference number (Vorgangsnummer). Save this as proof that the cancellation deadline has been secured.

Confirm the cancellation by phone within 7 days

Call 1&1 customer service at 0721 960 96 00 (Mon–Fri 8:00–22:00, Sat–Sun 9:00–21:00). Have your 1&1 Service-PIN and contract/phone number ready. Quote the reference number from step 7. The agent will verbally confirm the cancellation. Without this call, the cancellation is NOT finalized.
