What happens to my Firebase Auth users after I downgrade to Spark?

Your existing user accounts are preserved and remain accessible. However, on the Spark plan, Firebase Auth is limited to 10,000 monthly active users (MAUs). If your app regularly exceeds that, authentication will start failing for users beyond the limit until the next billing month.

Will I get a refund for unused Blaze plan charges?

No. Firebase (Google Cloud) does not issue prorated refunds when downgrading from the Blaze pay-as-you-go plan. You are only charged for actual usage up to the date of downgrade; there is no recurring subscription fee to refund.

Can I reactivate the Blaze plan later?

Yes. You can upgrade back to the Blaze plan at any time from the 'Usage and billing' tab in Project settings by clicking 'Upgrade' and linking a Cloud Billing account. Your project data and configuration are retained during the downgrade period.

Does downgrading delete my project data?

No data is immediately deleted, but some data may become inaccessible. Non-default Firestore database instances and non-default Cloud Storage buckets are inaccessible on the Spark plan (data is retained but locked). Export or migrate critical data before downgrading.

What is the alternative to downgrading — can I just unlink billing?

Yes. You can unlink the Cloud Billing account from your project in the Google Cloud Console (console.cloud.google.com → Billing → Manage billing accounts → unlink project). This also downgrades the project to the Spark free plan automatically.

Does canceling Firebase Auth billing affect other Firebase services?

Firebase Auth does not have its own standalone subscription — billing is at the project level via the Blaze plan. Downgrading to Spark affects all Firebase services in the project, not just Auth. Cloud Functions will be disabled, and pay-as-you-go usage across all products will stop.

Go to Firebase Console

Navigate to console.firebase.google.com and sign in with your Google Account that owns the Firebase project.

Select your project

Click on the project that has the Blaze (pay-as-you-go) billing plan you want to cancel or downgrade.

Open Project Settings

Click the gear icon (⚙) next to 'Project Overview' in the left-hand sidebar, then select 'Project settings' from the dropdown.

Go to Usage and billing tab

Inside Project settings, click the 'Usage and billing' tab at the top of the page. This shows your current plan (Blaze) and usage.

Click Modify plan

In the 'Billing plan' section, click the 'Modify plan' button or the plan name link to open the plan selection dialog.

Select Spark plan

In the plan selection dialog, click 'Select plan' under the 'Spark' column (the free, no-cost tier). Firebase will display a warning listing features and services that will become unavailable or limited.

Review impact and confirm downgrade

Read the list of impacted features (e.g., Cloud Functions will be disabled, non-default Firestore/Storage instances become inaccessible). Check the confirmation checkbox if shown, then click 'Downgrade to Spark' or 'Confirm' to finalize.

Verify plan change

Return to the 'Usage and billing' tab in Project settings. Confirm the plan now shows 'Spark' as your active billing plan. You will no longer be charged for Firebase Auth MAUs beyond the free-tier limits.
