Can I keep using EdgeDB/Gel after cancelling?

Yes. You can downgrade to the Free tier (1/4 compute unit, 1 GB disk, $0/month) instead of fully closing your account. Paid access ends immediately once instances are destroyed or downgraded.

Will I get a refund after cancelling?

No. Per Terms of Service Section 5.1, all fees paid are non-refundable. Cancelling mid-cycle does not entitle you to a partial refund for unused time.

What happens to my data when I cancel?

All data is permanently deleted when an instance is destroyed. There is no stated grace period or recovery option. Export your data before destroying any instance.

Can I reactivate a cancelled instance?

No. Once an instance is destroyed, the data is gone permanently and cannot be restored. You can create a new instance, but you would need to re-import your data from a backup.

How do I cancel if I am on an annual plan?

Annual subscriptions auto-renew. To prevent renewal, you must give written notice at least 30 days before the end of your current subscription term (ToS Section 12.1). Email to the address in your order/contract is acceptable.

Has EdgeDB changed its name? Will my cancellation steps be different?

Yes. EdgeDB rebranded to Gel (geldata.com). The cloud dashboard is now at cloud.geldata.com. The cancellation process is the same; just use the new domain.

Go to cloud.geldata.com (EdgeDB has rebranded to Gel; edgedb.com redirects here). Sign in with your account credentials.

Back up your data

Before cancelling, export any data you need. Destroying an instance permanently deletes all data with no recovery option.

Destroy each paid instance

On the Instances tab, open each instance you want to remove and destroy it. Alternatively, use the CLI: run 'gel instance destroy <org-name>/<instance-name>' for each instance. Add '--force' if the instance is linked to a project.

Open the Billing tab

In the main navigation, click the 'Billing' tab (alongside Instances and Org Settings).

Downgrade to Free or remove payment method

In the Billing tab, change your account type to the Free tier, or remove your payment method to stop future charges. There is no dedicated 'Cancel Subscription' button — stopping all paid instances and downgrading ends billing.

Send written notice if on a contract plan

If you are on an annual or enterprise contract, send written cancellation notice at least 30 days before your renewal date to prevent auto-renewal (per Terms of Service Section 12.1). Email is acceptable per ToS Section 13.2.
