Clear all outstanding balances
Before visiting a branch, settle any overdraft, unpaid fees, or credit card balance in full. Absa will not close an account with an outstanding balance. For credit cards specifically, call the Credit Card Management team on 0861 462 273 to confirm the payoff amount.
Redirect all debit orders and stop orders
Transfer all recurring payments (insurance, subscriptions, salary deposits) to another bank account. In Absa Online Banking, go to Payments > Scheduled Payments, select each payment tile, and tap 'Remove' for any debit orders you set up through Absa. Wait at least one full debit cycle on the new account before proceeding.
Withdraw or transfer remaining funds
Transfer all remaining funds out of the account via online banking or ATM. Alternatively, request the branch consultant to issue a cash payout or inter-bank transfer of any remaining balance at the time of closure.
Gather required documents
Bring your South African ID document or passport, your Absa bank card, your account number, and proof of address. Some branches may also ask for a recent bank statement. If a non-primary account holder is closing the account, written consent from the primary holder is required.
Visit your nearest Absa branch
Use the branch locator at https://www.absa.co.za/locate-us/ to find your nearest branch. Walk in and tell the consultant you want to close your account. The consultant will verify your identity before proceeding. Note: for credit cards only, you can skip the branch visit and close by phone on 0861 462 273.
Complete the account closure form
The branch consultant will provide an account closure form. Fill it in and sign it. The consultant processes the request in the system and confirms the closure has been submitted.
Request written confirmation
Before leaving the branch, ask the consultant for a printed or written confirmation that your closure request has been submitted. Absa will also send a confirmation via email or SMS. Monitor your account for any stray charges applied after the closure request date.
