Can I still access SharePoint files after canceling?

If you chose 'Cancel before next renewal date', you retain full access until the subscription period ends. If you chose 'Cancel now', access is reduced immediately — the subscription enters a Disabled state where admins can still retrieve data for up to 90 days before it is permanently deleted (no later than 180 days after cancellation).

Will I get a refund when I cancel SharePoint?

You are eligible for a prorated refund if you cancel within 7 days of the subscription start date or renewal date. The refund is credited back to your original payment method within 1–2 business days. Canceling after 7 days does not qualify for a refund.

What happens to my SharePoint data after cancellation?

Data is retained for up to 180 days after cancellation (admins have roughly 90 days of reduced access to back it up). However, if you explicitly delete the subscription rather than just canceling it, SharePoint Online data and OneDrive content is deleted immediately. Back up all files before canceling.

Do I need to be an admin to cancel SharePoint?

Yes. Only users with a Global Administrator or Billing Administrator role in Microsoft 365 can cancel a business subscription. If you bought SharePoint as an individual consumer plan, you can cancel at account.microsoft.com under 'Services & subscriptions'.

What if I can't find the Cancel option in the admin center?

The Cancel button may be missing if the subscription was purchased through a Microsoft reseller or volume licensing agreement — in that case, you must contact your reseller or Microsoft account representative directly. It may also be missing if you lack sufficient admin permissions.

Sign in to Microsoft 365 Admin Center

Go to https://admin.microsoft.com and sign in with your Microsoft 365 global admin or billing admin account. You must have admin permissions to cancel — regular users cannot cancel business subscriptions.

Navigate to Your Products

In the left sidebar, click 'Billing', then select 'Your products'. If you are in Simplified view, click 'Subscriptions' instead. This shows all active Microsoft 365 subscriptions.

Select the SharePoint Subscription

Find 'SharePoint (Plan 1)' or 'SharePoint (Plan 2)' in the product list and click on it to open the subscription details page.

Click 'Cancel subscription'

Scroll down to the 'Subscription and payment settings' section (or 'Billing settings' section). Click the 'Cancel subscription' link. A side panel titled 'Options for canceling your subscription' will open.

Choose cancellation timing

In the cancellation panel, select either 'Cancel now' (ends access immediately with prorated refund if within 7 days) or 'Cancel before the next renewal date' (keeps access until the billing period ends, no refund). Click 'Next'.

Select a cancellation reason

Choose a reason from the dropdown (e.g. 'Too expensive', 'Switching to a different service', etc.) and optionally provide written feedback. This is required before you can proceed.

Confirm cancellation

Click 'Cancel subscription' to confirm. The subscription status will change to 'Disabled'. You will receive a confirmation email at the billing account's email address.
