Will I lose access to my data immediately after canceling?

No. When you downgrade to Basic mid-billing-cycle, your paid plan remains active until the end of that billing period. Once the new cycle begins, your account switches to the Basic free tier. Existing recordings, heatmaps, and survey data are retained subject to Basic plan data limits.

Does Hotjar offer refunds?

Hotjar offers a 30-day money-back guarantee for new customers signing up for a paid subscription. If you believe you were on the wrong plan, you can downgrade via Billing and then contact Hotjar Support to request a refund for the billing difference. General mid-cycle cancellations are not automatically refunded.

Can I reactivate my paid plan after canceling?

Yes. You can upgrade from the Basic free plan back to any paid plan at any time by returning to Billing → Subscriptions → Manage subscriptions and selecting a paid tier. Your historical data collected during the paid period is preserved.

How do I fully delete my Hotjar account and all data?

Account deletion is separate from canceling your subscription. After downgrading to Basic, go to your Account Settings and look for the 'Delete Account' option. Deleting the account permanently removes all collected data (recordings, heatmaps, survey responses) and cannot be undone.

How long does Hotjar retain my data after I cancel?

On the Basic free plan, Hotjar retains data according to the Basic plan's data retention limits. Hotjar's data retention policies specify that data is stored for defined periods per plan level. If you need data removed sooner, you can delete the account or submit a data deletion request to Hotjar Support under GDPR/privacy rights.

Do I need to cancel Observe and Ask plans separately?

Log in to Hotjar

Go to insights.hotjar.com and sign in with your account credentials. You must be the Account Owner to cancel — team members with lower permissions cannot access billing settings.

Open Billing from your profile menu

Click your profile image in the top-right corner of the dashboard. In the dropdown menu that appears, select 'Billing'.

Navigate to Subscriptions

On the Billing page, click 'Subscriptions' to view all active paid plans across your Sites (Observe and/or Ask products).

Click 'Manage subscriptions'

On the Subscriptions page, click the 'Manage subscriptions' button to access plan management options for your Sites.

Click 'Change plan' next to your paid plan

Find the Site and product (Observe or Ask) you want to cancel. Click the 'Change plan' button next to it. If you have both Observe and Ask paid plans, you must repeat this step for each one separately.

Select the Basic (free) plan

In the plan selection window that appears, select 'Basic' — the free tier. This is how Hotjar processes cancellations: there is no explicit 'Cancel' button; downgrading to Basic stops all future charges.

Confirm with 'Change plan'

Click 'Change plan' to confirm the downgrade. Your paid plan remains active until the end of the current billing cycle, after which you will automatically move to Basic and no further charges will occur.
