Will I lose access immediately after cancelling?

No. Your paid plan remains active until the end of the current billing cycle. After that, your account downgrades to the free Basic plan and you retain access to Hotjar with reduced features.

Can I get a refund after cancelling?

Hotjar offers a 30-day money-back guarantee for new customers only. You must cancel within 30 days of your initial subscription. There are no pro-rated refunds for yearly plans cancelled after the 30-day window.

What happens to my data (recordings, heatmaps) after cancelling?

Your data is retained for 365 days from the date of capture, regardless of plan. After 365 days, data is automatically and permanently deleted. Note: session recordings cannot be exported, so save any important ones before cancelling.

How do I reactivate my subscription?

From your Basic plan, go to Profile image → Billing → Subscriptions → Manage subscriptions → Change plan, then select a paid plan and complete checkout. You are charged a pro-rated amount from the upgrade date through the end of the billing cycle.

Can I cancel just Observe or just Ask separately?

Yes. Observe (heatmaps & recordings) and Ask (surveys & feedback) are billed separately and can each be downgraded to Basic independently without affecting the other product.

How do I permanently delete all my data?

Downgrading to Basic keeps your data. To fully delete everything, use the Delete Account flow: Profile → Delete Account. This immediately makes all data inaccessible and permanently deletes it — this action cannot be undone.

Log in to Hotjar

Go to app.hotjar.com and log in with your account credentials. You must be the Account Owner — team members with other roles cannot cancel the subscription.

Open Billing settings

Click your profile image in the top-right corner of the dashboard, then select 'Billing' from the dropdown menu.

Go to Subscriptions

On the Billing page, click 'Subscriptions' in the left sidebar or main navigation.

Click Manage subscriptions

Click the 'Manage subscriptions' button. If this button is not visible, you are not the Account Owner and cannot proceed — check the Team page to find who the owner is.

Select the product to cancel

Hotjar has separate subscriptions for Observe (heatmaps & recordings) and Ask (surveys & feedback). Find the product you want to cancel and click 'Change plan' next to it.

Downgrade to the Basic plan

In the plan selection window, select the 'Basic' plan (free forever). There is no dedicated 'Cancel' button — selecting Basic is Hotjar's cancellation mechanism.

Confirm the plan change

Click 'Change plan' to confirm. Your paid plan remains active until the end of the current billing cycle, then automatically switches to Basic with no further charges.
