What happens to my app and users after I cancel?

If you downgrade to the free Hobby tier, your app keeps running within free-tier limits (50,000 monthly active users per app). All user data, authentication records, and configurations are preserved. Only if you fully terminate your account does Clerk delete your data, within 90 days per their Data Processing Agreement.

Will I get a refund for the unused portion of my billing period?

No. Clerk's standard terms explicitly state that paid subscription fees are non-refundable. You retain paid-tier access through the end of your current billing cycle after cancelling.

Can I reactivate my paid plan after cancelling?

Yes. Downgrading to Hobby keeps your account active and all data intact. You can upgrade back to a paid plan at any time from the Billing page in the dashboard.

Can I cancel by contacting Clerk support via email or chat?

No. Clerk's own documentation explicitly states that Clerk employees cannot cancel accounts in response to email, chat, or phone requests. Cancellation must be completed self-service inside the dashboard.

What is the difference between 'Cancel' and 'End' my subscription?

'Cancel' stops future charges but lets your paid plan run until the end of the current billing cycle. 'End' (available since July 2025) terminates access immediately. Choose 'Cancel' if you want to keep using the service through the period you've already paid for.

What happens to my data if I fully delete my Clerk account?

Per Clerk's Data Processing Addendum, Clerk will delete all customer personal data within 90 days of account termination. You can request a data export at the time of termination to receive a copy of your data before deletion.

Log in to Clerk Dashboard

Go to https://dashboard.clerk.com/ and sign in with your Clerk account credentials. You must be the account Admin to cancel — non-admin seats cannot initiate cancellation.

Select your application or organization

From the top-left dropdown menu, select the application or organization whose subscription you want to cancel.

Open Billing in the left sidebar

In the left navigation sidebar, click on 'Billing' to open your subscription and billing details page.

Locate your current plan

On the Billing page, find your active plan (Pro or Business) and the subscription details showing your renewal date and current charges.

Click 'Downgrade' or 'Cancel Subscription'

Click the 'Downgrade' button to move back to the free Hobby tier, or 'Cancel Subscription' to stop your paid plan. To cancel immediately with instant access termination, use the 'End' button instead (added July 2025). Downgrade/Cancel keeps paid access until end of billing cycle.

Confirm the cancellation

A confirmation prompt will appear. Review the details — noting that paid fees are non-refundable and access continues until the billing period ends — then confirm to complete the cancellation.
