What happens to my account and emails after I cancel?

Your paid features remain active until the end of your current billing period. After that, the account downgrades to the Free tier (1 GB storage, 1 alias, no custom domains). All your existing emails stay accessible within the Free plan limits.

Will my account be deleted when I cancel?

No, your account is not deleted when you cancel — it simply downgrades to the Free plan. However, Free accounts are deleted after 6 months of inactivity (no login). Tuta does not recycle email addresses, so your old address cannot be claimed by someone else.

Tuta offers a full refund within 14 days of the initial upgrade under EU statutory withdrawal rights (they are a German company). For accidental renewals, contact hello@tutao.de shortly after the invoice is issued and they typically issue a full refund. Refunds are generally not available outside these windows.

Can I reactivate my paid plan after cancelling?

Yes. If you downgraded to Free and want to resume a paid plan, log back in and go to Settings → Subscription to resubscribe at any time.

What if I subscribed through the iOS App Store or Google Play?

If you subscribed via Apple or Google, Tuta cannot cancel on your behalf. You must cancel directly through Apple (Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Tuta → Cancel Subscription) or Google Play (Profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Tuta → Cancel subscription).

What are the Free plan limits after downgrading?

The Free plan includes 1 GB storage, 1 email address, and 1 alias. Custom domains and additional aliases are removed. All existing emails remain encrypted and accessible within these limits.

Log in to Tuta

Go to app.tuta.com and sign in to your Tuta account with your email address and password.

Navigate to Subscription settings

Click the Settings gear icon in the left sidebar, then select the 'Subscription' section from the settings menu.

Initiate cancellation

In the Subscription section, look for the option to downgrade or terminate your plan. Alternatively, navigate directly to the termination page by going to https://app.tuta.com/?r=/termination while logged in.

Confirm termination

A confirmation dialog will appear. Click 'Confirm' to proceed with downgrading your account to the Free plan. Your paid features remain active until the end of the current billing period.

Check for confirmation email

Tuta sends a confirmation email to your inbox once the cancellation is processed. Verify you received it to confirm the subscription will not renew.
